PM Kisan: Objective
- To supplement the financial needs of small and marginal farmers.
- To protect farmers from undue reliance on moneylenders
PM Kisan scheme eligibility
When the PM Kisan scheme was officially launched on February 24, 2019 (although it had been operational since December 2018), its benefits were offered only to farmers’ families with combined landholding of up to 2 hectares. The scheme was later revised w.e.f. June 1, 2019 and extended to all farmer families, irrespective of the size of their landholdings. Thus, all landholding farmers’ families that have cultivable landholding in their names, are eligible to receive benefits under the scheme.
However, the following farmers are not eligible for benefits under the PM Kisan scheme:
a) All institutional land holders
b) Farmer families where one or more of its members belong to the following categories:
- Present / former ministers/state ministers and present / former members of the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, or state legislative assemblies or state or legislative councils, present / former mayors of municipal corporations and present / former chairpersons of district panchayats.
- Former and present holders of constitutional posts.
- All serving or retired officers and employees of central/state government ministries/offices/departments and its field units under central or state PSEs and attached offices/autonomous institutions under government as well as regular employees of local bodies (excluding multi-tasking staff/Class-lV/Group-D employees).
- All persons who paid income tax in the last assessment year.
- All retired pensioners
- Professionals like engineers, doctors, lawyers, chartered accountants and architects.

- Category (SC/ST)
- Aadhaar number

Rs 12K cr provided to Karnataka farmers under PM Kisan: Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 12, 2023, said that the government had directly transferred Rs 12,000 crore into the bank accounts of the farmers of Karnataka under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojna. More than 2.75 lakh farmers belonging to the Mandya region have been provided Rs 600 crore by the Central government alone, the PM added. The prime minister also lauded the Karnataka government for adding Rs 4,000 to the Rs 6,000 instalment of the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi. “In the double-engine government, Kisan is getting double benefits,” he said. Budget 2023-24: Rs 2.2 lakh cr cash transfers made for PM Kisan
The government made cash transfer of Rs 2.2 lakh crore under the PM Kisan scheme, finance minister (FM) Nirmala Sitharaman said. The FM made the statement while presenting the Union Budget 2023-24 on February 1, 2023. 11.3 cr farmers covered under PM Kisan in Apr-July: Economic Survey 2022-23
About 11.3 crore farmers were covered under the PM Kisan yojana in its April-July 2022-23 payment cycle, says the Economic Survey 2023, tabled in the Lok Sabha by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam on January 31, 2023. Through a span of over 3 years, the Central scheme has successfully provided assistance of more than Rs 2 lakh crore to crores of farmers in the country, says the Survey.
PM Kisan installment may be increased in Budget 2023
Finance minister Nirmala Sitharam may increase the PM Kisan amount from existing Rs 6,000 in a year to Rs 8,000 annually when she presents the Union Budget on February 1, 2023, say media reports, citing sources. If that were to happen, the government will release 4 in place of 3 annual installments of the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi in a year, says the report.
